Lighting Up Christmas

Lasers have come a long way since first really impacting on our lives some 50 years ago (2010 is LaserFest – celebrating 50 years of laser innovation) – they’re found in all kinds of places from barcode scanners in supermarkets to DVD players; medial equipment to space exploration!

Now, we’ll start to see them mapping out the intricate details of buildings and applied to spectacular visual effect up and down the country in light shows for festivals like Christmas. Derby (of all places) is one of the first in the UK to get in some lighting artists to transform the city’s architecture into their colourful canvases.

There’s loads of stunning videos out there showing 3D projection effects on buildings, here’s one of my favourite from NuFormer :

Did you know, laser is an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”?
